Recently, the Indonesian government has proposed a new development project in the Komodo Island national park, a specifically protected region for the endangered Komodo Dragons. In the project, villas and tourist infrastructure would be developed in inhabited portions of Padar Island and the Komodo Island itself, roughly taking up 5-10% of the islands in total. Currently, development is focused on the mainland areas of Labuan Bajo and the transportation to-and-from the Komodo Islands. Therefore, the project would accommodate even more tourists.
